This is your “captain” speaking…to our family and friends.

One of the many requirements of Bryce’s job is to speak with airplane pilots. I’m not totally sure at this moment as to the conversation exchange but suffice to say, Bryce talks to pilots and gives them instructions about clearance, arriving, departing, etc. With a lot of family and friends coming to the islands, or leaving to the mainland, it is only fair to assume that Bryce will speak to their pilot either upon arrival or departure.

There have been three instances to date, that Bryce, with my help of me of course because I generally have the flight info., has been able to send off family and friends with one last wish of Aloha!

Instance 1: My aunty Agnes came to Oahu shortly after we got married in 2010, at least I’m pretty sure it was 2010, I digress, we didn’t see her on that visit, but when she was aboard her flight on her way back to the mainland, she signaled the flight attendant upon entering the plane, said she new a controller, then got to speak to a pilot, who then called into the tower asking for a Bryce, and said his aunty was in the plane. The details about this story are a little fuzzy at the moment, but nevertheless my aunt was tickled by the whole thing, went home to California and told some other members of my family that she got to talk to the pilot and that by so doing was able to “communicate” with Bryce in the tower.

Instance 2: One of my former young women, left to Brigham Young University-Provo in Utah this past fall semester, and because I had her flight info., I was able to relay that to Bryce who was able to speak to the pilot and send our friend Haley off to college with best wishes. I’m pretty sure Haley thought this was cool.

Instance 3: My uncle Van and aunty Karin just came to Oahu for a family funeral. We did get to see them and have dinner with them. Aunty Karin told Bryce to make sure there flight leaves on time, or something of that nature, and he chuckled as he usually does and continued eating his fried rice from Side Street Inn. This was a Saturday. On the following Tuesday night, I get a text message from aunty Karin that said something to the effect of, “captain so and so said goodbye to us on the plane!! Tell Bryce thank you.” I could tell they were pleasantly surprised by the fact that their pilot would go over the intercom and speak to them specifically as they were leaving for home.

To the friends and family who have yet to receive this little surprise from the cockpit, be sure to remember to listen to the captain upon arriving or departing Honolulu International Airport. You never know when he or she has something profoundly important to say to you!

The Vulcan Diaries

When I first met Bryce, he had a motorcycle. We were just friends then, but I really enjoyed cruising with him down the H-1 with the wind in our hair, and not a care in the world. When I would go visit him in Utah, he again had a motorcycle, and we would again go cruising. Eventually Bryce had to sell his toy in preparation for moving back to Hawaii and then we got married and had other bills to pay, so he has been without a toy for a while, until we bought the Vulcan…

Our newest addition to the family.

Now let me go on record by saying that I protested the Vulcan at first, what kind of caring, overly-concerned wife would I be if I hadn’t? But then I had to remember that Bryce works really hard and he deserves to enjoy the fruits of his labor. Of course, being that I used to enjoy cruising with Bryce on his bike, I decided I might also partake of the fruits as well. So now we are the proud owners of a 2012 Kawasaki Vulcan 900. Of course, after Bryce’s motorcycle accident in 2007 (another story for another time), he is extra cautious now when he rides and especially when I ride with him.

Our first cruise together with the Vulcan was so much fun. I got to wear my extra cool, and somewhat feminine, pink and white helmet, and we jetted on out to the North Shore,  making stops along the way to give my butt a break. It’s fun having the Vulcan around now, makes life a little more fun for us, and we couldn’t ask for a more beautiful place to ride. Until the next adventure!

Isn’t he precious!

Together we ride, side by side.

Our Turks and Caicos getaway

It’s always fun to reflect back on a wonderful vacation, even after you come home and have to go back to the daily routine. Our vacation this summer was fantastic, and so it is a joy to be able to share it all here.

(PS, I uploaded a lot of photos to the slideshow, and you don’t want to miss any)

Now all along while planning our trip people would say, “Why the Caribbean, don’t you live in a tropical paradise?” It’s true we live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, but every place is different and every island is different for that matter. So we ignored all the raised eyebrows and went ahead and planned anyway. This year we traveled with our dear friends Jana and Stephen Wood, so the four of us narrowed down all the places in the Caribbean we could go or wanted to go and after a few weeks of the process of elimination phase, we decided on Turks and Caicos. It was less frequented than the Bahamas, and less expensive than Cayman Islands and I think looking back we were all very pleased with our choice. What most people don’t know about Turks and Caicos is that they are separate for example there are the Turks Islands and then the Caicos Islands with lots and lots of tiny cays or keys situated all along side them, some of which you can kayak or boat to. We were in a place called Providenciales on one of the Caicos Islands.

There is so much to report about our vacation but to save time I will explain some of the highlights and let the pictures do the rest. We rented a house for the week from a guy named Island Man Wayne, if you ever go to TCI you need to rent from him too. The house was awesome, clean and cozy and Wayne was just a wealth of information having lived there for many years already and we were so happy with our accommodations. We rented the bottom living area complete with two bedrooms and full kitchen.  We had so much fun cooking together, eating tons of candy, and playing Monopoly after our long days spent in the water or on the beach. Everyone had a wicked tan by the end of the week, even Bryce believe it or not.

Of course on of the main reasons we all went to TCI was to dive! Since Jana, Stephen and I all certified together, it was only natural that my first dive in the Caribbean be with them. We booked a two-tank dive with Flamingo Divers. We highly recommend them for the friendliness and professionalism but also because Jayne and Mickey were most accommodating and knew so much about TCI. I can’t say enough good things about them, you can read my review on Trip Advisor. The water in Turks and Caicos, although very salty, is like floating in a giant bath tub. It’s warm, it’s clear, and it was incredible. Of course the sea life didn’t hurt either when we did our dives, so many fish, so much coral, and sharks! Did I mention there were sharks in the water when we dove, that is my favorite part to tell people about. Needless to say it was a very good time!

I have to mention Sunny, our car for the week we were there. In the Caicos, because it is a British Colony and part of the British West Indies, everyone, well most people, drive on the left side of the road. And so, the steering wheel is on the right side of the car, talk about awkward. Bryce and Stephen did most of the driving.

Next I should probably mention the shells, yes I think I will. So many lovely shells everywhere. Now I’m sure everyone has seen shells before but not like the ones in TCI. They had conch shells (pronounced conk) as big as my head. Conch is said to be the delicacy of TCI, and it is even said to be an aphrodisiac. The government or the customs will allow three conch shells per traveler, so we brought some home as souvenirs for family, because it isn’t every day that you get to see a giant queen conch shell just hanging out on any of the beaches on the West Coast, or even Hawaii for that matter. Jana was relentless in her quest to find beautiful and rare shells, that was pretty much her mission on the trip and wouldn’t you know, she made out very well by the time we all left for home. By the way, we ate the conch, it was tasty, we went to this place that is pretty well known and talked about a lot in all the travel books called Da Conch Shack and it did not disappoint.

We had such a lovely vacation, admittedly I got tired of the sun and sand after a few days, but overall it was a lot of fun and it was a wonderful place to go. Thank you Bryce for working so hard so that we can go and see the world and thank you friends for making it such a memorable experience. Until our next adventure!

Kauai Dreams

This past weekend Bryce and I went to Kauai to hang with some of the Aubrey’s, Momma Aubrey, Devon, Ean and Alisa.

It was a last minute, short weekend kind of trip,  but it was so good to get off Oahu and see Momma Aubrey and the kids. Because Bryce has weekends off this year, we anticipate weekend getaways to outer islands! I’m especially fond of Kauai for its natural beauty and landscape but also because my Poppy, maternal grandfather, was born and raised on Kauai and my Poppy’s only living sibling, my Uncle Cu Cu, lives there still and I got to see him this past weekend. I love him so much and hope to see more of him and have him recall stories of the past to Bryce and I, especially because Bryce never got a chance to meet my Poppy.

Kauai is so beautiful, it’s slower and more lush and green, there were moments when we were driving on the one and only highway on the island, that I would look out at the gorgeous green valleys, or the rolling waves that I would think to myself, this place is like a dream. Here are some photos of our weekend dream adventure.

Vacation count down!

For our vacation this year, we decided to journey to another exotic island in the Caribbean, Turks and Caicos.

We rented a house that is right on the beach and can’t wait to snorkel and scuba dive with our good friends Jana and Stephen. Even though we live in Hawaii, we want to experience a different kind of ocean life, and the Caribbean boasts some of the best ocean adventure of any where on the planet. I’m hoping to see a shark in the water, but maybe at a distance.

We can’t wait! Stay tuned for more on our vacation and travel adventures.

The Random Liebster facts about Rachel
1. I have this anxiety about odd numbers. Anything that falls in an odd number, like a year or page number, is not right in my mind. My favorite number is 14, which was my number for sports during high school.
2.I love mixing and eating Kixs cereal with Reece’s Puffs cereal; I discovered this awesome combination several years back at my best friend Brittney’s house while she was living in Salt Lake City, Utah.
3.I’m a little outraged that people in this country, especially those in political circles, give lip service to the value education yet continue to allow cutbacks to educational budgets to be made in pursuit of other agendas. I’m also a little outraged that people continue to reek havoc and disarray on school campuses across the country. LEAVE YOUR GUNS AT HOME, INCREASE THE PEACE!!
4.Recently I was grateful when a good friend admitted she made a boo boo against me and apologized for it. It takes a person of big character to admit wrong doing and correct it, a principle Jesus taught :).
5.I’m also very grateful to have such balance in my life as of late: good friends not of my faith, good friends of my faith, awesome extended family.
6.I’m super excited about the vacation we are going on this summer with our dear friends Jana and Stephen Wood to Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean.
7.I wish I was 8 pounds lighter than what I currently weigh.Even number!!
8.My idea of a good time involves food and laughter, in no particular order.
9.Bryce bought me a new kitchen gadget recently, a 9 cup food processor and I secretly wish I could invite Guy Fierri and Giada DeLaurentis to my house to show me some secrets of the kitchen. I really enjoy cooking!
10.Recently, I have had a strong impulse to just run around with as few clothes on as possible, so pretty much this means in a bathing suit.
11. I have to have my wisdom teeth out this summer 😦
